Chennai, October 13, 2026: VSL PowerHive, the battery and energy storage subsidiary of Vikram Solar Limited, has announced plans to establish a 7.5 GWh per annum Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) assembly facility in Oragadam, near Chennai. The plant is scheduled for inauguration in January 2027, with commercial operations expected to commence by April 2027.
The new facility will span approximately 1.65 lakh sq. ft. and is designed for future expansion to a total capacity of 15 GWh. This project forms part of PowerHive’s broader roadmap to build 30 GWh of battery manufacturing capacity by 2030, which also includes a 7.5 GWh cell manufacturing programme set to begin from 2028.
Focus on LFP-based storage systems
The Oragadam plant will assemble Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP)-based energy storage systems targeting utility-scale, commercial, and industrial applications. The product range will feature 5.016 MWh and 6.25 MWh liquid-cooled BESS containers, the company’s P261 battery cabinets, and solutions integrating renewable energy with storage.
Indigenous technology and patent filings
VSL PowerHive is developing indigenous battery technologies and has initiated multiple patent filings to enhance its technology ownership and reduce dependence on imported know-how, the company said.
Support for local clean-tech ecosystem
The initiative aims to strengthen India’s domestic energy storage manufacturing ecosystem, create skilled jobs, and support the clean-tech industry in Tamil Nadu.
