PL Capital sets NIFTY 12-month target at 27,589 amid macro risks

Mumbai, October 13, 2026: PL Capital has set a 12-month NIFTY target of 27,589 in its latest India Strategy Report, citing rising geopolitical tensions, inflation, deficient monsoons and higher interest rates as factors likely to keep Indian equity markets under pressure in the near term.

The brokerage noted that the NIFTY has declined 8.2% over the past six weeks and 6% year-to-date, making India one of the weakest performing major economies. PL Capital expects continued volatility, warning that a V-shaped recovery is unlikely and that markets may move lower before consolidating.

Impact of monsoon deficit and El Niño

The report highlighted a 13% deficit in monsoon rainfall, affecting 17 out of 36 meteorological subdivisions and 42% of the country’s geographical spread. Water reservoirs are 21% below last year’s levels, raising concerns for soil moisture and the upcoming Rabi crop season. PL Capital warned that a strong El Niño could disrupt global agricultural production, impacting commodities such as soybeans, coffee, cocoa and palm oil, and sustaining inflation, given that food comprises about 40% of India’s inflation basket.

Earnings outlook and sector performance

PL Capital forecasts 16.2% sales growth and 14.7% EBITDA growth year-on-year in 2QFY27, excluding Oil & Gas. Across its coverage universe, the firm projects sales growth of 24.1%, EBITDA growth of 10.4%, and profit before tax growth of 8.6%. However, 16 out of 27 industry segments are experiencing lower EBITDA margins due to higher-cost inventories purchased during periods of elevated crude oil and input prices.

Monetary policy and global capital flows

The Reserve Bank of India raised the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and shifted its stance to “Calibrated Tightening.” The RBI’s inflation forecast for FY27 is 5.2%, with Q3FY27 and Q4FY27 inflation expected at 6.0% and 5.7% respectively. PL Capital cautioned that persistent high oil and agricultural commodity prices, along with supply chain disruptions, could keep inflation elevated and prompt further rate hikes. Higher interest rates and prices may also dampen post-festival consumer spending.

On global capital flows, PL Capital noted that higher bond yields in developed markets, such as US treasury bills at 5.3%, have made Indian equities less attractive to foreign institutional investors. The NIFTY 100 index has delivered an average return of 1.2% over the past five years. The report also cited India’s limited participation in emerging technologies as a constraint on international capital inflows.

Valuation and sectoral preferences

PL Capital’s NIFTY target of 27,589 is based on September 2028 earnings estimates and a 12% discount to the index’s 15-year average price-to-earnings multiple of 19.2x. The NIFTY currently trades at 15.5x one-year forward earnings, a 19.3% discount to its 15-year average. The firm cautioned that attractive valuations may not trigger an immediate recovery, with a bear-case NIFTY target of 22,044 reflecting potential further downside.

The brokerage remains overweight on Capital Goods, Healthcare, Banks, Metals, Diversified Financials, Telecom, and Ports, while underweight on Automobiles, IT Services, Consumer, and Oil & Gas. PL Capital advised selective stock-picking, noting that premium brands may be more resilient to inflationary pressures.

Amnish Aggarwal, Co-Head – Institutional Equities at PL Capital, said Indian equity markets are facing a challenging combination of rising inflation, geopolitical uncertainty and tightening financial conditions. “Although valuations have become more attractive following the recent correction, we do not expect a V-shaped recovery and believe markets could see further weakness before consolidating. In this environment, investors should remain selective, focusing on companies with strong fundamentals and sectors supported by domestic investment and structural growth opportunities,” Aggarwal said.
