PL Capital revises NIFTY 12-month target to 27,589 amid rising macro risks

Mumbai, October 13, 2026: PL Capital has set a new 12-month NIFTY target of 27,589, up from its previous estimate of 27,133, citing mounting macroeconomic and geopolitical risks that are expected to keep Indian equity markets under pressure in the near term. The assessment was released in the firm’s latest India Strategy Report, “The Perfect Storm: Rising Macro and Geopolitical Risks.”

The brokerage noted that the NIFTY has declined 8.2% over the past six weeks and 6% year-to-date, making India one of the weakest performers among major global economies. PL Capital attributed this trend to persistent foreign institutional investor (FII) selling, concerns over a 13% monsoon deficit, rising commodity prices, high bond yields, and the ongoing Iran-US conflict affecting the broader Middle East.

Inflation and monsoon deficit concerns

The report highlighted that the monsoon season ended with a 13% rainfall deficit, impacting 17 out of 36 meteorological subdivisions and 42% of India’s geographical area. Water reservoirs are 21% below last year’s levels, raising concerns for soil moisture and the upcoming Rabi crop season. PL Capital warned that a strong El Niño could further disrupt global agricultural production, potentially driving up prices of key commodities such as soybeans, coffee, cocoa, and palm oil. With food comprising about 40% of India’s inflation basket, the firm expects inflationary pressures to persist.

PL Capital also pointed to reduced monetary policy support, noting the Reserve Bank of India’s 25 basis point hike in the policy repo rate to 5.50%—the first increase since February 2023—and a shift to a “Calibrated Tightening” stance. The RBI has revised its inflation forecast for FY27 to 5.2%, with expectations of 6.0% in Q3FY27 and 5.7% in Q4FY27. The brokerage cautioned that continued high oil and agricultural commodity prices, along with supply chain disruptions, could necessitate further rate hikes.

Market outlook and sector preferences

PL Capital forecasts 16.2% sales growth and 14.7% EBITDA growth year-on-year for 2QFY27, excluding Oil & Gas. Across its coverage universe, the firm projects 24.1% sales growth, 10.4% EBITDA growth, and 8.6% profit before tax growth. However, 16 out of 27 industry segments are experiencing lower EBITDA margins due to higher-cost inventories acquired during periods of elevated crude oil and input prices.

The brokerage remains overweight on Capital Goods, Healthcare, Banks, Metals, Diversified Financials, Telecom, and Ports, while maintaining an underweight stance on Automobiles, IT Services, Consumer, and Oil & Gas. PL Capital noted that opportunities exist in sectors driven by domestic investments and credit growth, but emphasized the importance of selective stock-picking amid ongoing market corrections.

Valuation and foreign investor flows

PL Capital’s 12-month NIFTY target of 27,589 is based on September 2028 earnings estimates and a 12% discount to the index’s 15-year average price-to-earnings multiple of 19.2x. The NIFTY is currently trading at 15.5x one-year forward earnings, a 19.3% discount to its 15-year average. In a bear-case scenario, the firm estimates a NIFTY target of 22,044, reflecting potential further downside before consolidation.

The report also noted that higher global bond yields and subdued dollar-adjusted returns have made Indian equities less attractive to international investors. US treasury bills are yielding 5.3%, while the NIFTY 100 index has delivered an average return of 1.2% over the past five years. Limited participation in emerging technologies such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence may further constrain foreign capital inflows.

Expert commentary

Amnish Aggarwal, Co-Head – Institutional Equities at PL Capital, said Indian equity markets are contending with a “challenging combination of rising inflation, geopolitical uncertainty and tightening financial conditions.” He added that while domestic economic activity and corporate demand remain resilient, the effects of deficient monsoons, a strong El Niño, and elevated commodity prices could weigh on consumption and earnings in the coming quarters. Aggarwal also cautioned that attractive valuations may not trigger a swift recovery, and markets could see further weakness before consolidating.
