Vodafone Idea revised data shows telco lost 2.3 million subscribers in January

Vodafone Idea posts Rs 73,878 cr loss in last quarter

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released Vodafone Idea’s revised telecom subscription data for January which shows the telco lost 2.3 million subscribers. Vodafone Idea had earlier acknowledged its error in reporting the previous numbers which stated that the telco had added 1.7 million subscribers in January. TRAI has then noted that it was examining the numbers and that it was an inadvertent error on Vodafone’s side.

Vodafone Idea had previously told the regulator that it had added 3.7 million subscribers in UP West telecom circle alone. There are 22 telecom circles in India, out of which the telco reported that it lost subscribers in 18 circles and gained subscribers in four circles. It reported the highest number of subscriber additions in the UP West circle.

As per the corrected figures, Vi had lost 2.3 million wireless users in January while Airtel and Reliance Jio had gained 5.9 million and 2 million users respectively, ET Telecom reported. As of January 2021, Reliance Jio topped wireless subscriber numbers with a base of 410.7 million, followed by Airtel’s 344.6 million and Vi’s 281.9 million.

The TRAI had reported Vi to have the highest upload speed in February 2021. Vodafone India’s mean upload speed in February 2021 was at 7.2 Mbps while it was at 6.7 Mbps in January 2021. Idea recorded a mean upload speed at 6.4 Mbps in February 2021 while it was at 6 Mbps in January 2021. Vodafone Idea’s mean download speed was 9.2 Mbps in February 2021 up from the 8.7 Mbps it had recorded in January 2021.

Vodafone Idea also topped the TRAI’s voice call quality charts for February 2021. The telco has maintained its top rank in terms of call quality since November last year. TRAI counts Vodafone and Idea as two separate telecom companies on its MySpeed and My Calls portals despite the recent merger of Vodafone and Idea — Vi. Vi also recently rolled out 3GB daily data plans priced at Rs 401, Rs 601 and Rs 801 with 28 days, 56 days and 84 days validity. These plans also come with unlimited calling and SMS benefits.
