It commemorates the nation’s independence from the UK, which was instituted on this day in 1947. At this time, British India was divided into the states of India and Pakistan (the latter was officially granted independence a day earlier, on 14 August 1947).

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has celebrated Indian Independence Day with a variety of activities, staged 12-15 August. They include exploring India’s rich heritage through Patachitra art and the playing of classical Patua music. Images of the activities appear below.
