India, October 14, 2026: Sophos has announced the general availability of Sophos AI Defense, a new solution designed to help organisations identify unsanctioned AI tools and enforce security policies in real time. The product is delivered through Sophos Fusion, connecting endpoint, network, identity, and browser controls to provide unified visibility and management of AI usage across enterprise environments.
The launch comes as organisations face rising risks from unapproved AI agents and tools, with Sophos citing industry research showing that 82% of organisations have discovered shadow AI agents in their environments in the past year. According to Gartner, 69% of cybersecurity leaders suspect or have evidence of employees using unsanctioned AI tools, while 90% of IT leaders are concerned about shadow AI risk. IDC projects that the number of AI agents will reach 1.3 billion by 2028.
Real-time guardrails for AI adoption
Sophos AI Defense integrates controls at the device, network, sign-in, and browser levels, mapping AI activity and distinguishing routine use from actions that may require intervention. The system inspects prompts, uploads, and other AI interactions in real time to help prevent sensitive data exposure. Activity data is also fed into the Sophos Fusion system, enabling security teams using Sophos XDR and Sophos MDR analysts to investigate and respond through established workflows.
Sophos X-Ops has tracked attackers using AI agents inside customer networks to build and test nearly 80 malware modules, as well as threat actors selling brokered API keys for frontier AI models and trading jailbreak techniques on underground forums.
Industry response and deployment
Kyle Falkenhagen, senior vice president of product management at Sophos, said, “Organizations are adopting AI faster than they can secure it, and most security teams can’t answer three basic questions: which AI tools are running, what data is going into them, and whether that activity lines up with policy. Sophos AI Defense gives security teams that visibility and the control to act on it, so they can say yes to AI and know exactly what they’re saying yes to.”
Anthony Bender, CTO at Empyreal Logistics, noted that Sophos AI Defense has enabled his company to regulate and demonstrate secure AI use to customers. “We now have a handle on how we want our employees to use AI, and we can show our customers we are doing what we are saying. Now when our customers ask, we have a great answer for them,” Bender said.
Availability and sector context
Sophos AI Defense is available immediately. The launch coincides with Cybersecurity Awareness Month, reflecting the growing priority of safe AI adoption for organisations of all sizes. Full findings from Sophos X-Ops are detailed in the Sophos AI Security 2026 report.
