Two Brothers Recover from Severe Injuries After Accident, Treated at Manipal Hospitals Momstory

Pune, October 14, 2026: Two young brothers aged six and five have recovered from life-threatening brain and abdominal injuries sustained in a road accident, following critical multidisciplinary care at Manipal Hospitals Momstory in Pune, hospital officials said.

The siblings were riding a two-wheeler with their grandfather when the accident occurred. Their grandfather died at the scene, while the children were brought to the hospital shortly after, enabling immediate emergency intervention.

Details of Injuries and Initial Treatment

The elder brother, aged six years and two months, arrived with a severe traumatic brain injury, including a depressed fracture in the left frontoparietal region, brain contusion, and diffuse axonal injury. He had a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 7, indicating a critical neurological state, and required neurocritical care and monitoring in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

Dr. Ganesh Badge, Paediatric Intensivist and PICU In-charge at Manipal Hospitals Momstory, said the immediate focus was on protecting the brain from further injury by maintaining oxygenation, blood pressure, ventilatory support, seizure prevention, and fluid and electrolyte balance. The first two weeks saw slow neurological recovery, and the child developed cerebral salt wasting, necessitating close monitoring and treatment adjustments. Intensive neuro-physiotherapy and nutritional support were also provided.

Recovery and Rehabilitation Process

By the third week, the elder brother began showing purposeful movements, recognised family members, and his speech improved. He was discharged after approximately four weeks of hospitalisation, with significant neurological recovery attributed to continued neurocritical care and rehabilitation.

The five-year-old younger brother suffered extensive abdominal trauma, including a Grade III liver injury, Grade IV splenic injury, kidney involvement, and hemoperitoneum. He arrived in shock with substantial blood loss and required immediate resuscitation with intravenous fluids, blood products, and circulatory support. The paediatric surgery team, led by Dr. Jayesh Desale, opted for conservative management after his condition stabilised, avoiding emergency surgery.

Conservative Management and Outcome

The younger child’s clinical condition improved steadily under continuous PICU monitoring. He was discharged in stable condition after about one week, with no recurrence of bleeding or deterioration observed during his stay.

Dr. Jayesh Desale, Paediatric Surgeon at Manipal Hospitals Momstory, said, “In appropriately selected children with solid-organ injuries, non-operative management can allow the injured organs to heal while avoiding the additional risks associated with surgery. In this case, close monitoring and timely intervention helped us continue treatment safely without an operation.”

Medical Team and Broader Implications

The cases were managed by a multidisciplinary team including Dr. Ganesh Badge, Dr. Sandeep Patil (Paediatric Neurologist), Dr. Vishal Rokade (Neurosurgeon), and Dr. Jayesh Desale, with support from Dr. Meenakshi, Dr. Harshali, Dr. Swapnil, Dr. Furkan, and Dr. Nikhil, as well as the nursing, rehabilitation, and PICU teams.

The hospital said the cases underscore the varied and serious consequences of road traffic injuries in children, highlighting the importance of early assessment, rapid stabilisation, and continuous paediatric intensive care for positive outcomes.
