Major new awards program for short films announced

Sony Future Filmmaker Awards (SFFA) is a new awards programme to find and support up-and-coming, independent filmmakers and provide a gateway for the development of creative excellence. Sony is partnering with WPO – the same people that we do the SWPA with.

The Award ceremony will be held in Los Angeles at the Sony Pictures studio lot in Culver City, California on Wednesday 22nd February 2023, with all 30 shortlisted and winning filmmakers brought to L.A. for a black-tie awards night and to attend 2-days of workshops, screenings and panel discussions with industry experts on the 23rd and 24th February.

The Awards comprise 6 categories split into 3 competitions: Filmmaker (3 categories), Student Filmmaker (2 categories) and Future Format, a technical challenge brief which changes annually.  Submissions are 5-20 mins long for the Filmmaker and Student Filmmaker competitions and 2-5 mins long for Future Format. There will be a total of 6 winners receiving a mix of cash prizes and camera equipment in addition to the 2-day workshops and trip to L.A.
