California Commissioner Orders Another Insurance Cancellation Moratorium for Wildfire

California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara on Thursday ordered insurance corporations to protect residential insurance protection following Gov. Gavin Newsom’s newest wildfire emergency declarations.

Lara’s order shields policyholders inside the wildfire perimeter or in adjoining ZIP codes of the Mosquito and Fairview fires in Riverside, Placer, and El Dorado counties from insurance non-renewal or cancellation for one 12 months from the date of the governor’s Sept. 8 declaration no matter whether or not they suffered a loss.

This follows moratorium orders Lara issued in mid-September.

The newest moratorium order consists of 40 new ZIP codes in Riverside, Placer, and El Dorado counties, affecting over 236,000 wildfire survivors. Consumers can go to the Department of Insurance web site to see if their ZIP code is included within the moratorium.
