Fuel Derived From Used Cooking Oil Underlines Sinopec’s Long-term Strategy for Sustainable Development

BEIJING, Sept. 23, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Sinopec Zhenhai Refinery of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (HKG: 0386, “Sinopec”) obtained a bio-jet gas airworthiness certificates issued by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on September 19. The first batch of bio-jet gas might be shipped to the Airbus (China) Tianjin plant this month. The gas, derived from used cooking oil, will then be used for flights throughout China. This will mark the primary time that large-scale produced bio-jet gas will serve the aviation trade in China.

The airworthiness certificates implies that Sinopec can promote the bio-jet gas produced at Sinopec Zhenhai Refinery to aviation operators nationwide. The refinery, within the Zhenhai District of Ningbo, Zhejiang province, has an annual designed processing capability of 100,000 tons and adopts Sinopec’s bio-jet gas manufacturing know-how (SRJET) to provide the gas. The plant’s first batch in June produced round 600 tons of bio-jet gas.

“With the airworthiness certificate, Sinopec Zhenhai Refinery can now sell bio-jet fuel to the entire civil aviation market, we will continue to expand the market and supply chain to build a full industry chain of bio-jet fuel,” stated Mo Dingge, CEO of Sinopec Zhenhai Refinery.

China has strict requirements for airworthiness certification. Beforehand, consultants from the Airworthiness Certification Center of CAAC performed on-site evaluations at Sinopec Zhenhai Refinery that lined all phases of operation, together with the bio-jet gas high quality administration system, manufacturing course of administration and management, product storage and transportation and pattern evaluation and testing.

The refinery has already obtained Asia’s first world RSB sustainable aviation gas certification issued by Scientific Certification Systems, a key cross for China’s bio-jet gas to enter the worldwide market.
