Mumbai, October 22, 2026: PL Wealth’s latest Market Outlook has highlighted the continued resilience of India’s domestic growth, supported by robust economic activity, a return of foreign portfolio investor (FPI) flows, and a strong start to the Q1 FY27 earnings season. The firm, however, cautioned that elevated crude oil prices, the risk of a strengthening El Niño, and global interest rate uncertainty could cause near-term volatility, recommending a selective approach to equities and a focus on accrual-oriented fixed-income strategies.
India’s GDP expanded by 7.8% in Q1 FY27, with gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) rising 11.9%. The Reserve Bank of India projects GDP growth for FY27 at 6.7%. Manufacturing and services sectors grew by 9.2% and 10.0% respectively, while non-food bank credit growth stood at 19.1% year-on-year as of July 2026.
Inflation and policy rate outlook
Consumer price index (CPI) inflation was recorded at 4.45% in July 2026, and food inflation at 5.52%. PL Wealth noted risks of inflation exceeding projections due to a 13% monsoon rainfall deficit as of August 26, 2026, and kharif crop planting being 2% below normal. Brent crude oil prices averaged US$90–US$93 per barrel in August. The firm anticipates a potential 25–50 basis point policy rate hike in Q3 or Q4 FY27, depending on crude prices and monsoon developments.
Inderbir Jolly, CEO, PL Wealth, said India’s growth momentum and the return of foreign investor flows are positive for markets, but cautioned that elevated crude prices, monsoon risks, and global interest rate uncertainty require a measured investment approach. He advised investors to remain selective, focus on quality, and deploy capital in a staggered manner across investment horizons.
Equity market trends and sector performance
Indian equities showed mixed performance in August, with midcap and smallcap stocks displaying resilience despite pressure on the Nifty 50, which was at 24,208 on August 26. The Nifty Midcap 150 rose 13.4% year-on-year as of August 31, 2026, while the Nifty 50 declined 1.4% over the same period.
PL Research reported that Q1 FY27 earnings (excluding oil and gas) grew 17% year-on-year, the highest since Q4 FY24 and 2.6% above estimates. Banking, metals, telecom, and healthcare sectors posted earnings beats, though high input costs may impact margins in coming quarters. The Nifty was trading at 17.3 times one-year forward earnings at 24,208, 11.7% below its 15-year average P/E of 19.6. PL Research’s base-case Nifty target for the next 12 months is 27,123.
PL Wealth recommends phased exposure to large and mid-cap strategies in the near term, and prefers large private banks, capital goods, durable consumption, and select quality small cap, flexi-cap and multi-cap strategies in the medium term. The long-term positive outlook is underpinned by domestic capital spending, demographics, financial deepening, indigenous defence capabilities, and growth potential.
Fixed income and commodities outlook
On fixed income, PL Wealth has adopted a conservative stance due to inflation risks and policy rate uncertainty. The RBI kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.25% in August. The closure of the FCNR deposit channel, which brought in US$100 billion, has added liquidity and stabilised the short end of the yield curve. The firm prefers short-term instruments (three months to three years), with certificates of deposit yielding 7.0–7.5% and commercial papers 7.3–7.8%. The 10-year government bond yield was around 6.72% post-August policy, with a fair value estimate of 6.75–6.90%. PL Wealth sees levels above 6.95% as an opportunity to increase duration, but expects any strong duration move to be premature ahead of a possible rate hike in the second half of FY27.
Gold rebounded in July, ending above US$4,100 per ounce, with PL Wealth forecasting a range of US$3,900–4,400 per ounce in the near term, supported by central bank buying. Silver remained range-bound at US$58–59 per ounce, with physical market deficits and green technology demand providing support, though a sustained rally would require increased ETF inflows.
Long-term outlook remains positive
PL Wealth’s September outlook emphasises selective equity participation, phased capital allocation, and an accrual-oriented fixed-income approach. While crude oil, monsoon patterns, and international interest rates pose short-term risks, the firm maintains a positive long-term investment view on India based on its domestic economic strength and growth fundamentals.
