New Delhi, October 6, 2026: ICRA has released an analysis of the newly introduced ISO/UNDP 53001:2026 standard, outlining its potential impact on Indian companies seeking to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The ISO/UNDP 53001 standard, launched in 2026, is the first globally agreed, requirements-based management system for the SDGs, developed in line with the UNDP SDG Impact standards announced in 2021. The standard aims to provide a common framework for organisations to move from voluntary SDG alignment to measurable contribution improvement.
Evolution of SDG frameworks
The SDG journey began in 2000 with the adoption of the Millennium Development Goals, which comprised eight goals focused mainly on developing countries and led by governments. In 2015, all 193 United Nations member states adopted the 2030 Agenda, introducing 17 SDGs with 169 targets and recognising the role of business as a key contributor. Since then, businesses have voluntarily declared alignment with the SDGs, supported by guidance from the SDG Compass, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), UN Global Compact, and World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
Structured approach for Indian companies
According to ICRA, many businesses already state SDG alignment, often through mapping in sustainability reports. The new ISO/UNDP 53001 standard offers a structured and globally recognised method for companies to signal their alignment more accurately.
In India, the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) requires listed companies to disclose policies, management processes, and performance against the nine National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct (NGRBC) principles. These principles overlap with SDG themes such as environment, human rights, employee well-being, and inclusive growth. ICRA notes that the management system approach of ISO/UNDP 53001 could support companies in strengthening the processes behind these disclosures.
