Hyderabad, 04 July 2025 (BFN Bureau): A new pilot project in Hyderabad has successfully demonstrated Japan’s Bio-Lace technology for sewage treatment. This initiative aims to improve the quality of water in urban drains and lakes under the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB).
Innovative Sewage Treatment Technology
Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy reviewed the project’s performance at the HMWSSB Sewage Treatment Plant in Fatehnagar. The pilot project, which treats one million liters of sewage daily, is the first of its kind in India and was developed in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and TBR Co., Ltd.
Reddy highlighted the technology’s success in Japan, where it has restored over 400 rivers and waterways. He noted that the pilot project in Hyderabad has shown significant improvements in water quality, indicating its potential as a sustainable solution for urban pollution.
Future Plans and Environmental Impact
HMWSSB is committed to ensuring that no untreated sewage enters the Musi River. Reddy stated, “We are moving rapidly towards achieving this objective within the coming year.” The Bio-Lace technology requires significantly less land and energy compared to traditional methods, making it a cost-effective option for sewage treatment.
Initial results from the pilot project indicate a 90% reduction in Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and an 85% reduction in Total Suspended Solids (TSS). These improvements not only enhance water quality but also reduce foul odors, making the technology an attractive option for future sewage treatment plants in the city.
