Hyderabad, October 22, 2026: Aagam Jain, a Grade 12 IB student at Indus International School, Hyderabad, has developed SummitSathi, a low-cost satellite weather receiver designed to deliver cloud images from weather satellites to remote Himalayan villages without the need for internet or mobile connectivity.
The device is currently being operated by three local operators across 10 villages in the Seraj valley of Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, reaching more than 1,000 residents. According to the project team, SummitSathi aims to provide local weather information during monsoon-related communication outages, potentially aiding in saving lives.
Device details and patent recognition
Each SummitSathi receiver is built using readily available components at an approximate cost of ₹68,000. The system is not intended as a cloudburst prediction tool or a replacement for official weather warnings, but serves as an additional source of local weather data. Jain has received a patent for the innovation from the Indian Patent Office and has filed an Indian patent application as the sole inventor.
Presentation at international conference
Aagam Jain is scheduled to present SummitSathi at ECRS 2026, an international remote-sensing conference, held from October 19 to 21.
Additional science outreach and research
Beyond SummitSathi, Jain has conducted independent astronomy research, studying around 595 suspected exoplanets using software he developed, and recording Hyderabad’s night-sky brightness over 24 months at 25 locations to create a dataset on urban light pollution. He has also distributed his self-published astrophotography book, “A Window to the Universe,” to more than 350 students, and leads the Summit Stargazer initiative to promote astronomy education.
Other achievements
Outside of his scientific work, Jain captains his school’s athletics team of approximately 170 students and competes at the national level in sprinting and hammer throw.
