Hyderabad/Tokyo, October 27, 2026: AM Green Ammonia (India) Private Limited has signed a Binding Heads of Agreement with Japan’s JERA Co., Inc. for the long-term supply of approximately 70,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year over five years, with the possibility of extending the term for additional supply.
The green ammonia will be produced at AM Green’s facility in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, which is scheduled for commissioning by 2028/29. The supply is intended primarily for a maritime bunkering initiative to fuel ammonia-powered car carriers in Japan, marking one of AM Green’s first delivered-basis supply contracts in the Asian market and one of the first large-scale green ammonia bunkering initiatives globally.
Green ammonia for maritime decarbonisation
The ammonia will be supplied through receiving, storage, and distribution facilities being developed adjacent to JERA’s Hekinan Thermal Power Station in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The primary recipient will be a business venture to be established by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, which plans to use an ammonia bunkering vessel to supply fuel to ammonia-fueled car carriers.
The green ammonia will meet internationally recognised low-carbon standards and is benchmarked against European market requirements. AM Green’s Kakinada facility will use round-the-clock renewable energy architecture, supported by pumped-hydro storage and advanced alkaline electrolysis technology.
Expanding ammonia value chain in Japan
This agreement is part of JERA’s strategy to build an end-to-end low-carbon ammonia value chain, extending ammonia use in Japan beyond power generation to maritime fuel. The long-term procurement from India will add renewable-based green ammonia to JERA’s low-carbon ammonia portfolio, supporting supply security and resilience for Japanese customers seeking to meet decarbonisation goals.
According to Irtiza Sayyed, Senior Managing Executive Officer and CEO of JERA Global Energy Solutions, the agreement is a significant step in developing a lower carbon value chain for Japan, combining JERA’s domestic infrastructure with its global supply capabilities to connect diversified ammonia sources with Japanese customer needs.
Milestone for AM Green and India’s green ammonia sector
Mahesh Kolli, Group President and Joint Managing Director of AM Green, said the partnership with JERA reflects growing demand for competitively priced green molecules from India and highlights the strategic importance of the Kakinada project for Japan’s and the maritime industry’s decarbonisation ambitions.
AM Green, promoted by the founders of Greenko Group and backed by investors such as Gentari and GIC, is developing green ammonia projects across multiple locations in India with a target of reaching 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) capacity. The 1 MTPA Kakinada plant, currently under construction, is set to be one of the world’s largest green ammonia facilities.
