
Insurance companies want policyholders to inform them about additions of off-grid and electricity backup systems to ensure they have a valid claim.
Many South Africans have, for some time, realised that they need permanent solutions to deal with the power cuts that the country has battled with for over a decade.
In the past few months, solar installers have been kept busy as load shedding escalated with no end in sight, while insurers have seen a spike in homes and buildings that have added solar solutions, which must now be insured.
“There is currently a spike in the purchase and installation of backup electricity generation capabilities,” said Momentum Insure chief actuary, Rudolf Britz. “But please be vigilant when purchasing and installing these systems,” he warned. Britz said that due to the surge in demand for solar and electricity backup systems, some suppliers and installers might take shortcuts or offer poorer quality than expected.
