Transport department notifies on vehicle insurance

The Transport department has issued a notification emphasizing the mandatory requirement of vehicle insurance as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The notification states that “(1) No person shall use, except as a passenger, or cause or allow any other person to use, a motor vehicle in a public place, unless there is in force, in relation to the use of the vehicle by that person or that other person, as the case may be, a policy of insurance complying with the requirements of this chapter.”

According to Section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, any person found driving a motor vehicle in contravention of this requirement may face penalties, including imprisonment for up to three months, a fine of up to one thousand rupees, or both. Subsequent offenses may result in harsher penalties with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three months, or with fine or four thousand rupees, or with both. The provisions of these sections are enforceable throughout India, and law enforcement agencies, including the police and personnel from the Motor Vehicle Department, are tasked with conducting vehicle checks to ensure compliance.

The State government emphasizes the importance of mandatory insurance against third-party risks for all motor vehicles to safeguard public interests.
Therefore, all vehicle owners are directed to ensure their vehicles are adequately insured against third-party risks to avoid penalties.
