MANZINI- Manzini Wanderers Council of Elders Chairperson Joe Nkumane providing life insurance for players could potentially contribute to the growth and development of professional sports in Eswatini.

Nkumane said during Wanderers player Kwanele ‘Namnede’ Dlamini’s memorial service yesterday. Nkumane suggested that providing life insurance for MTN Premier League players would offer the much-needed financial support to their families in the event of their unexpected passing. He emphasised the importance of safeguarding the welfare of players and ensuring that their loved ones were taken care of, even in the most difficult circumstances.

“I personally challenged all football governing bodies in Eswatini to prioritise the well-being of players by providing life insurance and other forms of financial protection. Soccer players who pass away often leave behind families who struggle with poverty, and, therefore, it is important to establish safeguards to ensure their dependants are taken care of. Life insurance policies should cover not only deaths, but also serious health issues and career-ending injuries, to ensure that players and their families are supported throughout their careers and beyond,’’ he said.

He extended his heartfelt condolences to the entire football community, particularly to Kwanele’s family and teammates. His message was one of unity and solidarity, urging everyone to come together in support of those affected by this tragic loss.

“I challenge the players to honour Kwanele’s memory by putting forth their best effort to avoid relegation. I urge them not to lose hope or despair in the face of adversity, as death is a natural part of life. The players should draw strength and motivation from Kwanele’s passion for the team and play with even greater determination to achieve success in his memory,” he added.

Meanwhile, former Moneni Pirates striker Nhlanhla ‘Madida’ Mabuza emphasised the importance of thorough medical screening for soccer players to ensure that they were physically fit and healthy to participate in games.
