Zero Summit Philippines set to shake all four sectors and challenge everyone to create action steps towards food waste and hunger
MANILA, PHILIPPINES, July 12, 2023/EINPresswire.com/ — Global food rescue foundation Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) is set to host the inaugural Zero Summit Philippines, a multi-stakeholder gathering dedicated to addressing hunger and food waste. The event will take place on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at the Areté Black Box Theater, Ateneo de Manila University.
Food insecurity affects one in 10 households in the Philippines, according to the World Food Programme, with vulnerable communities continuing to face involuntary hunger.
Under the theme “Zero to Hero”, the summit aims to unite food industry leaders and sustainability advocates from the academia, business, civil society and government sectors towards the vision of ZERO food waste and ZERO hunger by 2030.
James Leyson, Managing Director for Thailand and the Philippines at SOS, highlighted the interconnectedness of food waste, food insecurity and hunger, saying: “How can we effectively reduce food waste, from production to consumption, while also ensuring that no one has to go to bed on an empty stomach? We invite leaders, innovative thinkers and doers to take part in this shared responsibility of building a sustainable and equitable food system.”
Launched in 2021 in Thailand as the first-ever food-driven sustainability event in the country, the Zero Summit events have since gathered key stakeholders to discuss food waste in the context of environmental and socio-economic problems, and raised funds to provide meals for vulnerable communities.
Since October 2022, SOS Philippines has been mobilizing partners in its mission to end hunger. Their initiatives include the Food Rescue Program, which involves collecting surplus food of excellent quality from donors for distribution to vulnerable communities; while the Rescue Kitchen Program enlists passionate volunteers who utilize the rescued food to prepare nutritious meals.
