The study highlights the efficacy of NRT in smokeless tobacco users, with almost 70% of participants being chewers

New Delhi, January 28, 2024: A clinical trial conducted at SCB Dental College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, has unveiled a game-changing approach in the fight against tobacco addiction. The study, led by Dr Utkal Mohanty, demonstrates that combining Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) with Behavioral Therapy proves five times more effective in aiding smoking cessation than Behavioral Therapy alone. The results carry immense significance for India, grappling with high tobacco consumption rates.

The trial involved 93 tobacco users, including smokers and chewers, randomly assigned to groups receiving nicotine gum, nicotine patches, or counselling only. Extended follow-up for up to 26 weeks showcased the unparalleled success of the NRT-behavioral therapy combo, resulting in nearly a fivefold increase in quit rates compared to counselling alone. Notably, the study highlights the efficacy of NRT in smokeless tobacco users, with almost 70 percent of participants being chewers.

Reflecting on the outcomes, Dr Utkal Mohanty emphasised the transformative impact of a holistic approach, urging the extension of this model for widespread access to comprehensive quit resources. Padma Shri Awardee Dr C chandrakant S Pandav stressed the urgency of keeping NRT accessible, especially in remote areas, to liberate millions from tobacco’s grip. Dr Sajeela Maini, Head of Tobacco Cessation at Sir Gangaram Hospital, underscored NRT’s pivotal role in smoking cessation, citing its effectiveness in reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
