A new practice for dealing with no insurance cases has been signalled by District Court Judge James Faughnan
At a recent sitting of Roscommon District Court Judge Faughnan told solicitors said that from May 1st, people found guilty of driving without insurance would be disqualified from driving, unless there were “exceptional circumstances”.
“We have one of the highest incidences of driving without insurance in Europe,” he said, adding it was something he could not stand over.
Judges can exercise some discretion not to disqualify someone for a first time offence of driving without insurance.
