The IRDAI has asked insurance companies to to put in place a policy approved by their board of directors on the scrapping or disposal of out-of-date computer operating systems and equipment.

The insurance regulator points out that the “Guidelines on Information and Cyber Security for Insurers” dated 7 April 2017 require insurance companies to configure IT infrastructure including servers, applications, network, and security devices to ensure security, reliability, and stability.

With increased digitisation and online governance, cyber security has become an integral and important part of governance, the IRDAI says in a circular. Hackers/crackers exploit weaknesses such as ignorance or non-adherence to security procedures, flaws in processes, or vulnerabilities in technology (both hardware and software).

Further, the use of out-of-date operating systems and IT equipment must be discontinued as it makes the IT system susceptible to cyber attacks, the IRDAI adds.
