The Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to intensify the campaign for the adoption of insurance by motorists in line with relevant laws.
A delegation of the association comprising the governing council paid a visit to the FRSC corps marshal, Dauda Ali Biu, in Abuja, to consolidate their long-standing relationship to explore other areas of mutual collaboration.
Since the launch of the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) code *565*11# in the industry in 2019 by the NIA, there have been moves by the association to partner with federal and state security agencies to address the issue of fake motor insurance on Nigerian roads.
With the USSD, it means vehicle owners can check if their motor insurance policies are genuine and when they will expire, by dialing *565*11# on a mobile phone.
Speaking during the visit, the NIA chairman, Segun Omosehin, said that the move was in line with the theme of his tenure, ‘Expanding the frontiers of insurance through partnership and stakeholders’.
Addressing the corps marshal and his team, the NIA boss congratulated the corps marshal on his appointment and acknowledged the good work of the FRSC in curbing road accidents through periodic checks.
He expressed the support of the association to the FRSC and urged the leadership to intensify its campaign for safety on the roads by stressing the need for motorists to obtain necessary insurance policies in line with the relevant laws of the land.
“The NIA will continue to be a strong ally and do all within its powers to support the corps marshal and his team. Our appeal is that the FRSC should continue to help to ensure the validation of genuine insurance in line with the law,” he added.
He promised that NIA would collaborate with the FRSC to address the concern of victims of motor vehicle accidents and adequately compensate them through continued access to the Nigerian Insurance Industry Database platform that would aid verification of insurance documents, including passenger liability cover.
Biu on his part, thanked the NIA delegation for the visit and urged the association to sustain frequent interaction and extend the same to other enforcement agencies to ensure eradication of fake insurance. He added that creating more awareness about the benefits of insurance will encourage more vehicle owners to embrace it.
Yetunde Ilori, the director-general of the association appreciated the corps marshal for the opportunity to visit and discuss matters of mutual interest between the two institutions.
