MindGym Initiative urges daily mental fitness on World Mental Health Day

New Delhi, October 9, 2026: The MindGym Initiative, a volunteer-led nonprofit founded in the USA, has called for making mental fitness exercises a daily habit, highlighting their role in managing anxiety and improving focus, particularly among children and young adults. The appeal comes as part of the organisation’s activities marking World Mental Health Day.

Prithvi Raj Banerjee, founder of MindGym Initiative and author of “Mindful Thinking: Simple Ways to Let Go of Your Anxiety, Boost Your Productivity and Rewire Your Thoughts,” said that regular mental exercises can help individuals develop healthier thinking patterns and cope with the pressures of modern life, including digital distractions and information overload.

Programme structure and techniques

The MindGym programme is structured as an eight-week course featuring 12 techniques such as Belly Breathing, Bumblebee Hum, Balanced Breath, Body Radar, Word Anchor, Catch and Drop, and Play and Pause. These exercises are designed to help participants regulate attention, recognise emotional responses, and disengage from repetitive or unhelpful thought patterns.

Interactive games and biofeedback-based activities, including Mindball, are also used in MindGym workshops to make attention training more engaging. The initiative has conducted hundreds of workshops since 2017, involving thousands of children and young adults from diverse backgrounds. Many participants joined to improve their concentration and ability to focus.

Observed outcomes and approach

According to the MindGym Initiative, observations made before and after workshop sessions indicated improvements in participants’ ability to settle and sustain attention. However, the organisation noted that these observations should not be considered clinical evidence of treatment effectiveness.

Banerjee, an IIT (BHU) and MIT-trained technologist and mindfulness coach, developed the programme by combining technology with yogic and mindfulness practices. He emphasised that the ability to consciously direct attention and manage responses to external stimulation is becoming an important life skill in a technology-driven environment.

Workshops and accessibility

The MindGym Initiative primarily conducts its workshops online for both children and adults, aiming to make mental fitness practices accessible and easy to incorporate into daily routines. Proceeds received by Banerjee from his book “Mindful Thinking” help support free MindGym workshops.
