TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – As the St. Patrick’s Day weekend impends, Lending Tree insurance analyst, Rob Bhatt is reminding everyone to practice safe driving as the alcohol intake is expected to increase nationally.

The study performed by Lending Tree examined drunk driving-related incidents from March 16-18 and compared them to the rest of the month. The numbers from the days surrounding the holiday were significantly higher.

“Accidents involving drunk drivers were up 16% during that St. Patrick’s holiday period,” Bhatt said. “The number of accidents or frequency of accidents involving younger drivers between 21-24 is up about 15% and fatal crashes, hit and run were up about 12%.”

Another way to be proactive is to keep up on insurance, specifically uninsured motorist coverage.

“Having the right insurance before you get into an accident is going to help you out a lot more after you get into an accident, and this includes accidents that other people might cause that might impact you financially if you don’t have the right coverage,” Bhatt explained.
