Hyderabad, October 24, 2026: Aagam Jain, a Grade 12 IB student at Indus International School, Hyderabad, has developed SummitSathi, a patented offline satellite weather receiver designed to deliver cloud images from weather satellites to remote Himalayan villages without the need for internet or mobile connectivity.
The device is currently in use across 10 villages in the Seraj valley of Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, serving over 1,000 residents. Three receivers, each operated by a locally trained individual, provide local weather information during monsoon-related communication outages, according to the project team.
Device offers local weather data
SummitSathi is built from readily available components, with each unit costing approximately ₹68,000. The system is intended as an additional source of weather information for communities that experience frequent mobile network failures, although it is not a cloudburst prediction tool or a substitute for official weather warnings.
Patent and international presentation
Aagam Jain has filed an Indian patent application as the sole inventor of SummitSathi, with the patent granted by the Indian Patent Office. He is scheduled to present his work at ECRS 2026, an international remote-sensing conference, from October 19 to 21.
Broader science outreach and research
In addition to SummitSathi, Jain has conducted independent astronomy research, studying around 595 suspected exoplanets using software he developed. He also compiled a two-year dataset on Hyderabad’s night-sky brightness at 25 locations to document urban light pollution.
Jain’s science outreach includes distributing his astrophotography book, “A Window to the Universe,” to more than 350 students and running the Summit Stargazer initiative to promote astronomy education. Outside of science, he captains his school’s athletics team of about 170 students and competes nationally in sprinting and hammer throw.
