The Delhi Police have arrested a 26-year-old man who allegedly duped people of lakhs of rupees by promising them job opportunities in various airline companies, officers said.

The arrested identified as Rohit claimed that he had been jobless for two years due to Covid-19 pandemic and hence took to fraudulent practices to make easy money. He said he came in contact with Sagar, a resident of Panipat, who used to work at a call centre in Hisar and taught him how to create fake social media profiles and websites online, the police said.

The police said that the cheating came to the fore in December last year when a person named Praveen Kumar filed a complaint stating that his wife was duped after she visited an advertisement link on Instagram regarding vacancies in an airline company and lost more than Rs 8 lakh.

“On opening the link, she was diverted to another ID called ‘airlinejoballindia’. She filled in her particulars in the given format and submitted it online. Thereafter, she received a telephone call on the given mobile number wherein the caller introduced himself as Rahul from the airline recruitment service,” said DCP (Central) Sanjay Kumar Sain.

The police said that as instructed by the executive, the woman made a registration fee of Rs 750 after the company accepted her form. “Later, in the name of gate pass fee and insurance security money, the person made her deposit Rs 8.69 lakh and continued to demand more money which made the woman suspicious,” Sain said.

Based on the complaint, the police analysed the bank account details and call detail records of the accused. “On analysis, the bank account of the accused was found to be fake and most of the withdrawals were traced to Hisar in Haryana. A raid was carried out and the accused, Rohit, was arrested,” the DCP said.
