However, it’s also the standard time before users grow bored of waiting for the content to load and start moving to other pages.

For example, if the main piece is an image and is labeled with the standard <img>, there could be several <script> tags ahead of it that could slow down its load speed.

Browsers have to receive the first byte of the first HTML document before loading any additional background source. This is called Time to First Byte (TTFB). Browsers will perform “tasks,” discrete work in the background, including rendering, layout, parsing, compiling, and executing scripts. If certain tasks take a long time (long being more than 50 milliseconds), it’ll block more important scripts and make it hard for the browser to respond to user inputs. Avoid this mishap by breaking longer tasks into concise, short ones.

Websites with a lot of JavaScript can have tasks that compete for attention, which could lower FID overall. It’s a good idea to identify and remove any unneeded code, which will decrease the number of resources during the loading process. This will allow the page or website more time to parse and compile the necessary code.

Other than JavaScript, rendering can also take quite a bit of time. Figuring out how to optimize rendering is more complex and will take more time sorting through existing code. The best CLS scores are less than 0.1. Any values higher than that imply that the page is unstable and shifts often. The higher the number, the higher the probability that it’ll result in a bad user experience and lower rankings on search result pages. A few remedies to avoid that situation include the following:

– Setting appropriate sizes for on-page content beforehand
– Ensuring pages are eligible for back/forward cache
– Avoiding animations and transitions

Layout shifts can happen on a page even after all the main content has finished loading. For example, unsized photos, third-party ads, or embedded videos can cause layout shifts, which could ruin a page’s appearance while loading.
