The champagne corks from New Year’s Eve have been picked up. The Christmas trees are on the curb. But there is still more time for another end-of-the-year tradition: picking a health insurance plan.
The deadline for New Jerseyans to sign up for health coverage in 2024 through the Affordable Care Act is Jan. 31.
The state marketplace for Obamacare called “Get Covered New Jersey” is designed for residents who do not get health insurance through an employer or government programs such as Medicaid or Medicare. New Jersey has one of the longest open-enrollment periods of any state, beginning Nov. 1 and lasting through January.
A record 367,000 New Jerseyans had already signed up by Jan. 2, almost 25,000 more than last year and 42,000 more than 2022. That number will only get higher once January signups are tallied.
Subsidies to discount premiums through ‘Get Covered New Jersey’
The state offers subsidies to discount insurance premiums provided by private companies through “Get Covered New Jersey,” mostly based on income levels. The average amount of financial help for 2024 coverage is $574 per person per month. While the plans are advertised as affordable, premiums range significantly depending on what the plans cover, how much out-of-pocket costs they require and how many people are on it.
State workers will hold a few pop-up enrollment and assistance events this week at malls in north, central and south Jersey.
A team was scheduled to be at the Willowbrook Mall on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. near the Starbucks at the food court to help customers choose a plan. Other locations and dates this week include:
- Thursday: Menlo Park Mall — 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- Friday: Menlo Park Mall — 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- Saturday: Cherry Hill Mall — noon to 4 p.m.
- Sunday: Cherry Hill Mall — noon to 4 p.m.
