Rezum machine is a revolutionary technology for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Ahmedabad, July 29, 2024Aarna Super-speciality Hospital has become the first healthcare facility in Gujarat to introduce the Rezum machine, a revolutionary technology for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). This condition, commonly affecting men over the age of 50, presents symptoms such as a weak urinary stream, intermittent flow, straining to pass urine, incomplete bladder emptying, frequent urination, and nocturia (waking up at night to urinate), significantly impacting the quality of life.

BPH occurs due to the enlargement of the prostate gland, which obstructs the urethra. While medications and traditional endoscopic surgical options are available, they often come with significant side effects, including sexual dysfunction, urinary leakage and long recovery times.

Rezum therapy represents a breakthrough in BPH treatment. The procedure involves injecting sterile water vapour into the obstructing prostatic tissue, causing cell death and the subsequent reabsorption of the prostate tissue, thereby removing the obstruction. This minimally invasive treatment significantly improves urinary symptoms without compromising sexual function or urinary control. The procedure is quick, lasting only 5-7 minutes, and requires minimal anaesthesia, ensuring swift and smooth post-operative recovery.

Although Rezum has been available globally for the past 5-7 years, it was launched in India only in January 2024.

Dr. Rohit Joshi, Chairman & Chief Urologist of Aarna Super-speciality Hospital, the first Urologist in Gujarat & second in India to perform this procedure, said, “We are privileged to be the first hospital in Gujarat to install the Rezum technology. Pioneering the Rezum technology in the state reflects our commitment to provide the highest quality of care with advanced medical technologies to our patients. We have already successfully treated many patients with promising results.”

Incidentally Dr. Rohit Joshi was the first urologist to have performed Prostatic Urethral Lift in Gujarat and has till date the highest experience across India.

Rezum Therapy is particularly beneficial for two groups of BPH patients. The first is younger patients who wish to preserve their sexual function and want a rapid recovery with minimal hospitalisation. The second group is elderly and high-risk patients for whom the procedure can be performed under minimal anaesthesia with negligible risks.
