28-Year-Old BARC Employee Declared Brain Dead After Accident; Organs Donated to Multiple Hospitals

Mumbai, July 1, 2026: The family of a 28-year-old employee of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) consented to organ and tissue donation after he was declared brain dead, enabling transplants for multiple patients across Mumbai.

The employee was injured in a road accident on the night of June 24 and was first admitted to a local hospital. As his condition worsened, he was shifted to Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, where he was treated by a multidisciplinary team. He was declared brain dead on June 29 after doctors said further treatment could not save him. His family subsequently agreed to donate his organs.

The liver and one kidney were allocated to H. N. Reliance Hospital, a second kidney was transplanted at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, and the heart was sent to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri. Bone tissue was donated to the National Tissue Bank and Research Centre (NTBRC), an independent tissue bank, where it will be processed for use in reconstructive surgeries and approved medical research.

Dr. Sushil Kumar, Centre Head, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, said the family’s decision came despite the loss they had just suffered. “Their decision has given multiple patients a chance at a longer life and will also benefit others through tissue donation,” he said.

The organ retrieval and transport process involved coordination between transplant surgeons, intensive care specialists, transplant coordinators, nursing staff, ambulance services and the recipient hospitals to ensure the organs reached patients within the required time.

Healthcare professionals have urged families to discuss organ donation in advance, noting that a single donor can help multiple patients.
