Three Mumbai airport employees arrested for stealing Xiaomi phones worth Rs 6.5 lakh


Mumbai crime branch has arrested three loaders working at Chhatrapati Shivaji airport on Monday for allegedly stealing Xiaomi mobile phones coming from Bengaluru to the city for delivery to customers.

The accused Indrajeet Magar, 28, Satish Ombalkar, 28, Chhotelal Yadav, 26, live in Mumbai and were working at the airport for last two to three years. The police recovered 53 mobile phones from them, Hindustan Times reported.

The theft came to the light when an employee of EDS International Private Limited, the company responsible for transporting Xiaomi mobile phone from Bengaluru to Mumbai, registered a complaint with the airport police station.

The police inspector Srimant Shinde of Mumbai crime branch informed that the phones come from Bengaluru to Mumbai via Indigo Airlines in bulk and are stored in a warehouse in the city before being distributed to the customers who have ordered them online.

As per the registered complaint, several smartphones were reported missing on the way from the cargo bay at the airport to the warehouse. The police team questioned around 30 people involved in the process.

The police narrowed down to the trio after examining multiple evidence. In the custody, they confessed to the crime and on their instance, the police recovered 53 mobile phones worth Rs 6.5 lakh, Shinde said.

The police are further probing if they have been involved in any other theft at the airport.moneycontrol
