Mi Mix 2 is Xiaomi’s answer to rivals in the premium segment

Xiaomi is making a fresh bid for the premium segment market in India with the new Mi Mix 2. A follow up to the Mi Mix, which was never released in the Indian market, the Mi Mix 2 has a similar bezel-less design which has allowed phone makers to incorporate really big screens in smaller form-factor. It will be available in India in a single (6GB RAM+128GB storage) variant at Rs35,999 from 17 October on Flipkart.com and Mi.com. It will be available on offline stores from November 2017.

The Mi Mix 2 has hardly any bezels on the front panel except for a thin strip under the screen. The new Apple iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Google Pixel 2 XL are some of recently announced flagship smartphones with a similar design language.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2’s closest rivals are the LG G6 (Rs33,940), OnePlus 5 (Rs32,999 onwards) and Nokia 8 (Rs36,999).

The USP of the Mi Mix 2 is the unique design. The 6-inch display covers almost the entire front panel. This gives the screen an edge-to-edge feel. Despite the big screen, the Mi Mix 2 stands 151.8mm tall and is 75.5mm wide. However, it weighs 185g due to the ceramic finish on the back.

Among its closest rivals, the LG G6 is the only smartphone with a similar design. It offers a 5.7-inch screen with very thin bezels. It is 148.9mm tall mm, 71.9mm wide and weighs 163g. The OnePlus 5, which offers a 5.5-inch screen, is 154.2mm tall, 74.1mm wide and weighs 153g. The Nokia 8, which has a smaller 5.3-inch screen, is 151.5mm tall, 73.7mm wide and weighs 160g.

The Xiaomi smartphone looks better placed as it offers a bigger screen without looking any bigger than them. It lacks protection against water. The LG G6 is the only smartphone which offers some sort of water protection. It has IP68 certification and is water proof up to a depth of 1.5 metres for 30 minutes.

The 6-inch screen in Mi Mix 2 offers plenty of space for reading, gaming and typing. The 18:9 aspect ratio provides a more immersive and edge-to-edge experience. It has a screen resolution of 2,160×1,080p. The LG G6 offers a resolution of 2,880×1,440p and 18:9 aspect ratio on a 5.7-inch screen, while the Nokia 8 packs a resolution of 2,560×1,440p on a 5.3-inch screen. The OnePlus offers a resolution of 1,920×1,080p on its 5.5-inch screen.

The Mi Mix 2 is a powerful smartphone and runs on Qualcomm’s 10nm Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor, which also powers the OnePlus 5, Nokia 8 and a few other flagship smartphones such as the HTC U11 and the Sony Xperia XZ Premium. While Mi Mix 2 and OnePlus 5 clubs it with 6GB RAM, the Nokia 8 pairs it with 4GB RAM. LG G6 runs on last year’s Snapdragon 821 quad-core processor with 4GB RAM in tow.

For camera buffs, the Mi Mix 2 has a 12-megapixel camera powered by Sony IMX386 sensor with OIS (optical image stabilisation), and aperture of f/2.0. All the three rivals have got dual cameras. The OnePlus 5 has a 20+16 megapixel cameras powered by Sony IMX 398 sensor, aperture of f/1.7 and OIS. The Nokia 8 offers dual 13-megapixel cameras powered by Carl Zeiss lens, aperture of f/2.0 and OIS. The LG G6 has two 13-megapixel cameras with Sony IMX 258 sensors and aperture of f/1.8. OnePlus has a superior sensor and is better equipped for low-light photos. However, we have seen cameras with inferior sensors and smarter algorithm deliver better shots.

The Mi Mix 2 runs Android 7.1 (Nougat) with Xiaomi’s proprietary MIUI 9, which is designed for mainstream users. It offers plenty of useful features and customisation options. LG G6 runs Android 7.1 with a more polished LG UI, but doesn’t have as many features as the MIUI. If you are more at home with plain Android, the Nokia 8 is the best option among rivals. It runs Android 7.1. The OnePlus 5 runs Android 7.1 with Oxygen OS which offers slightly more customisation than plain Android.
