New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded the role played by India’s Nari Shakti (women power) in the positive transformation of the country and the society.

In his first Mann Ki Baat radio address of the year, Modi said more women were assuming leadership roles and becoming self-reliant.

“Women are leading from the front in every field today. They are pioneering new achievements and establishing milestones,” said Modi, adding that empowerment was also a form of self-reliance for women.

He also recalled astronaut Kalpana Chawla, whose death anniversary is on 1 February: “Her life is an example for the entire world, especially Indian women. Her life demonstrates Nari Shakti,” he said.

Modi also mentioned women fighter pilots Bhavna Kanth, Mohana Singh and Avani Chaturvedi who are training on the Sukhoi. He spoke about the Adivasi women of Chhattisgarh who were driving e-rickshaws in Maoist-affected Dantewada region to become self-reliant.

“Our woman power has achieved extraordinary feats, breaking the age old shackles of social mores, creating new records. They have shown that any hurdle can be overcome by hard work and determination and in doing so they have inspired our coming generations,” said Modi.

He also spoke about the self-correcting mechanism of the Indian society and the role women will play in building a “New India.”

“The benchmark of any living society is its self-correcting mechanism. In our country, there have been unending endeavours against social ills and evil practices, both individually & collectively. Women have and will play a significant role in building of a New India,” he said.

Modi also spoke about affordable healthcare and ‘Ease of Living’ in the country and mentioned Jan Aushadhi Kendras which have been opened throughout the country to ensure quality and affordable healthcare for the poor.

“Over 3,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras have been opened across the country. This has made healthcare affordable but has also given a platform to individual entrepreneurs. This is to provide quality and affordable healthcare to the poor,” he said.livemint
