Bhopal, November, 2018: Bhopal’s District Administration partnered with Ola, India’s leading and one of the world’s largest ridesharing companies, to offer free rides for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) who seek to cast their votes on 28th November in Bhopal. The free service was made available for these voters from their place of residence to the polling booth and back, till the allocated time of polling.
Ola offered free rides to Persons with Disabilities to cast their votes
In order to promote voter literacy and accessibility, the Election Commission of India has launched its flagship program, Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP). As a responsible corporate citizen, Ola has come forward to enable essential mobility services for voters across Bhopal. Together with the election authorities, Ola has rolled out special initiatives to facilitate persons with disabilities for the election day:
- Electors with disabilities have been mapped according to the polling stations so that requisite facilitation can be extended on polling day
- Ola volunteers got in touch with them to ensure seamless travel and top rated drivers and Ola Rental cabs were assigned to them
- Special passes were provided to Ola cabs ferrying PWD voters to facilitate voting without them having to stand in a queue
Dr. Sudam Khade (Bhopal Collector and District Magistrate) , District Administration, Bhopal said “This initiative has a positive social impact on the lives of many citizens who want to cast their ballot. We are committed to increasing the participation of Persons with Disabilities, and are focused on helping them exercise their fundamental right. Transportation to the polls can be a challenge for them and we appreciate Ola’s efforts in making voting accessible to all.”
Shekhar Datta, Business Head at Ola said, “Ease of mobility is a vital aspect in ensuring maximum participation in the elections. As a socially responsible organization, Ola is committed to facilitating hassle free mobility for every voter in Bhopal. We are glad to partner with the local authorities and continue to support social initiatives to make mobility more convenient.”
This initiative follows the company’s efforts to drive awareness and encourage citizens to be socially responsible. In September last year, Ola partnered with the Delhi University to provide free Ola Share cabs for students to vote in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election. Ola’s Swachhata campaign to help driver partners find public toilets near them and the ‘Give Way Give Life’ campaign urging citizens to give way to ambulances, are some of the other public interest initiatives from the company.
