Atal Bihari Vajpayee admitted to AIIMS for health check-up, condition stable

New Delhi: Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was admitted to New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Monday for a routine check-up. “He is stable. A team of doctors under the supervision of Dr. Randeep Guleria, director, AIIMS, are conducting tests,” AIIMS said in a statement. Dr. Guleria has been taking care of Vajpayee for a long time.

Vajpayee was brought to AIIMS around 11.30am, according to the AIIMS statement. “Doctors have not decided to discharge him as yet,” said an AIIMS official who did not wish to be named.

The 93-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader is the oldest living former Indian Prime Minister. “He is in AIIMS for a normal routine check-up. He is fine and doctors in AIIMS are taking care of him,” said J.P. Nadda, Union minister of health and family welfare.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Vajpayee at AIIMS in the evening. He enquired about Vajpayee’s well-being and met his family members, official sources said. BJP president Amit Shah, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and Nadda also visited AIIMS to meet Vajpayee.

Vajpayee’s health has been a cause of concern for the BJP. He had undergone knee replacement surgery at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai in 2001 and suffered a stroke in 2009 that impaired his speech. He is also suffering from diabetes and dementia. With his health deteriorating, Vajpayee gradually withdrew from public life and has been confined to his residence for several years.livemint
