Insurance companies in Bengaluru now flooded with claims

BENGALURU: Vehicle owners in southeast and south Bengaluru are making a beeline to insurance companies following Tuesday’s record rain that submerged the vehicles parked on roads and basements of their apartment complexes.

Companies expect more claims after the weekend once the affected people have finished setting their households in order after the flood.

Hundreds of cars and other vehicles were damaged due to waterlogging. While many have approached insurance companies for damage assessment, others have taken their vehicles, especially two-wheelers, to private mechanics for repair.

A Tata AIG spokesperson said the company had received 53 vehicles till Thursday. The company is expecting a hundred more, he said. “Since the work shop does not have space to accommodate vehicles, we informed vehicle owners to bring the vehicle after a week,“ he said. The city received 12.8 cm of rainfall in the early hours of Tuesday . The HAL airport region recorded 14.3 cm. The highest rain of 18 cm fell at Bilekahalli, off Banerghatta Road. The most affected areas are Koramangala, Wilson Garden, HSR Layout, JP Nagar and Shanthinagar among others. And, this is from where most insurance claims are coming from.

Suresh Gubbi, an insurance claims supervisor at ICICI Lombard, said nearly 100 vehicle owners had approached the company. “Each vehicle needs a mini mum one week for the repair. And if water has gone inside the engine, opening the engine will take more time,“ he pointed out.

Apparently, most vehicle owners had, thankfully , brought their vehicles without starting them. “So the engines are in good condition. The few who tried to start them have ceased them up,“ he said. Also, most vehicle owners had opted for the `engine protection’ option, which would take care of the expenses for engine repair.

At many apartment complexes where basements are parking areas, vehicles are still swamped as water has not receded completely .

S Ragunandan’s brand new Maruti Ciaz was submerged in the basement of his JP Nagar Dollar’s Colony flat. “There are 20 cars damaged in our apartment. I am yet to take it for service as, for the past two days, we have been cleaning the house,“ he said. — Insure– banking/finance u/f
