Michael Mayer to move to China to head sales & marketing, Lespiaucq to take interim charge of the VW brand

MUMBAI: Michael Mayer, the director of Volkswagen brand in India on completing his assignment in India will take up the role of head – sales and marketing at Volkswagen Passenger Cars China, the largest for VW globally.

Thierry Lespiaucq, the MD of Volkswagen Group Sales India Private Limited will take charge of Volkswagen Cars in India, said the statement from the company.

Under Mayer’s leadership since June 2014, Volkswagen Passenger Cars in India implemented expansion of its product portfolio in India with the launch of Beetle in 2015, followed by Ameo and GTI in 2016, and Tiguan and Passat, which have been planned for 2017.

Mayer took forward the consolidation drive started under Arvind Saxena, former MD of the company and worked towards a profitable operations for the company and the dealer. He however was not able to expand volumes or market share, with lack of new products in the heart of the market. He had a tough task of steering the brand in the middle of diesel gate scandal which hit VW globally, that had an impact on the Indian market as well.

In order to build the premium positioning of the brand, Mayer was responsible in bringing back the Halo brand like Beetle and more premium products like Passat and Tiguan in the portfolio.

On the movement of Mayer to China, Thierry Lespiaucq said, “Mr. Mayer’s passion and enthusiasm for the brand is something that will always be remembered. While Mr. Mayer’s able leadership and commitment in strengthening the Volkswagen brand in India will certainly be missed, we would like to wish him loads of success in his new role in China, which is the largest single market globally for Volkswagen.”
