In UP, Rahul uses Urdu couplet to slam Modi for currency ban fallout

ALMORA: A day after quoting Ghalib during a rally at Bahraich in UP, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi quoted an Urdu couplet by poet Bashir Badr — “Log toot jaate hain ek ghar banane mein, Tum taras nahin khate grihastiyan jalane mein” — at the beginning of his rally in Almora which set the tone for his attack on Modi for the way the demonetisation exercise was carried out.
Trying to strike a chord with the people of Almora on the demonetisation issue, Gandhi said, “Modiji is asking people of this country to go cashless, but can people of Almora eat the famous bal mithai of Khim Singh Mohan Singh through Paytm,” Gandhi asked a crowded audience referring to the popular sweet of the region and the problem of erratic network connectivity in the hills.
Alleging that the hill state of Uttarakhand had been deprived of its dues, the Congress functionary said, “Why did the Modi government not give Uttarakhand its dues of Rs 7,000 crore? The state has been robbed of its rights and important sectors such as tourism and transport have been hit. Workers from State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Ltd have been asked to leave,” Gandhi said. He added, “Farmers buy seeds through cash, not through mobile phones. Labourers get daily wages in cash, not via credit cards. Unemployment is highest at this moment due to demonetisation.”
While his speech was going on, the crowd cheered and waved enthusiastically. Some also shouted slogans against the Centre. Noticing this, Gandhi told them to be restrained. “Don’t say murdabad to anyone. They do that, we don’t. This is Gandhiji’s party,” he added.

Earlier, Gandhi reached the rally venue at around 3pm accompanied by CM Harish Rawat. Congress members claimed that the turn-out was almost 10,000, but observers said that the number of people would be in the region of 3,000 to 4,000.
Sarita Arya, Congress MLA from Nainital claimed that the rally was “a huge success and a big morale-booster”. “Rahulji has made us proud and this rally will further inspire the workers to go ahead and perform. Rahulji exposed the Modi government and touched every aspect of life in Uttarakhand. People listened to him intently and responded well,” she said.
