Poles, transformers trigger traffic gridlock, angry cops move Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation

HYDERABAD: Traffic cops have taken up the issue of electric poles and transformers in the middle of roads obstructing hassle-free passage of vehicles at a traffic coordination meeting held at the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

The lack of coordination between the GHMC and Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL), has irked traffic officials, who claim to have been sending missives to civic Janardhan Reddy every week asking for the removal of these obstructions.

“There is an electric pole jutting out in the middle of the road in West Marredpally , and despite several complaints lodged with the GHMC, nothing has been done about it,” said Jayendra Pundit, a resident of West Marredpally .
While GHMC officials say there are 440 poles and 67 transformers which need to be removed immediately , they blame the discom for the delay in re moval. They claim the removal of such poles and transformers do not fall under their area of expertise. “We will inform the discom about the problem and have it removed,” said an official from the GHMC’s engineering wing. G Raghuma Reddy , chairman and managing director of the discom, said,”We work based on complaints from people or letters from the civic officials. We are taking action everytime we receive a letter. Unfortunately , there are no specific areas or zone-wise complaints that have arisen.”He said that removing a transformer would result in power outage for a period of three hours at least. “So given the time taken for relocating them, we try to work when there is no traffic.”
