BHUBANESWAR: People made a beeline for jewellery shops in the city to buy gold on the occasion of Dhanteras. Jewellery shop owners said there was a brisk sale.
Some jewellery shops announced attractive discounts on making charges while a few others gave freebies on jewellery sets to boost the sales. The shopowners said 50-60% increase in sales compared to that of last year.
Price of 10 gm (22 karat) gold was Rs 29,700 in Bhubaneswar, while cost of 10 gm of 24 karat gold was Rs 32,400 on Friday. “We are happy that our business is good this year. We witnessed customers standing in queues,” said Purnima Sahu, managing director of Subash Jewellers.
Kishore Wadher, assistant general manager (operation) of Khimji Jewellers, said they had not received good response last year as the marriage market was down.
“This year we witnessed more footfall. People were interested to buy designer jewellery than gold coins and bars,” he added.
This buying spree will continue till Sunday, said a shop owner. “We are getting positive response this time. We hope for a good business as marriage season is approaching,” said Manik Hans, franchise owner of Tanishq, Chandrasekharpur.
People believe that purchasing gold on the occasion of Dhanteras brings good luck. “Every year, I buy gold jewellery or coin on the occasion of Dhanteras. This year I bought a pair of earrings for my granddaughter,” said Minu Meher, a customer.
Bhajamanlal Singh, a customer, said he bought a gold coin tradition demanded that on the auspicious occasion. “Investment on gold is not a bad idea,” he added.
Jewellery shops in Berhampur witnessed a rush. People believe Mahalaxmi, the goddess of wealth, can be invoked if one purchases gold on the day. The shops had more number of ornaments, which attracted the customers, said Satya Narayan Senapati, president, Berhampur Jewellery Association.
