Around last Diwali, the global economy was showing signs of trouble while the much-anticipated earnings recovery was several quarters from showing up. It resulted in a muted Samvat 2071 (Hindu calendar ending November 10, 2015), with the Sensex closing -1 percent down. Samvat 2072 fared relatively better as earnings finally appeared to be turning the corner while global equity markets, awash in liquidity, too supported. Through the year, the Sensex notched up nearly 9 percent return. Sectors like metal, oil and gas, auto, realty, banks and FMCG outperformed the indices with a positive return between 8 percent and 45 percent. The topper, however, was the BSE Metal index — which had been battered down in 2071 — with a 45 percent return in 2072. Among the BSE 500 list, ten stocks doubled their investors’ returns. The best, Manappuram Finance and GNFC , soared 347 percent and 276 percent respectively. However, stocks like Lycos Internet , Alok Industries , Marksans Pharma and Just Dial fell between 45 percent and 67 percent. Below is the list of best and worst performing stocks of Samvat 2072.
