TS promised funds for plantation along highways


The NHAI Chairman, Raghav Chandra, has asked the Telangana government to submit proposals to avail itself of funding by the Authority for planting saplings along the national highways passing through the State. The State government would get Rs. 1,500 per tree and a maximum of 800 trees could be planted per km.

Mr. Raghav Chandra met the Chief Secretary, Rajiv Sharma, at the Secretariat when the latter raised the question of funds for trees planted by the State government along the national highways.

The Roads and Buildings Secretary Sunil Sharma told The Hindu later that the government had agreed to prepare a project report for planting trees all along the five national highways – Vijayawada, Warangal, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Nagpur – and submit it to the NHAI shortly.

A release said the meeting also discussed the deliberations in New Delhi recently on safety at dangerous zones on national highways. A decision to empower regional offices of NHAI to take up works at such places was taken on the occasion. It was also decided to earmark 10 per cent of the project cost for road safety. The contractors executing the road works would handle safety measures.

The Chief Secretary assured to examine land allotment for the regional office of NHAI in Hyderabad. Steps would also be taken for land allotment to construct roadside amenities at Veliminedu near Chityal and Akupamula near Munagala in Nalgonda district, along Hyderabad-Vijayawada national highway.

The State government will soon send revised proposals to NHAI for development of national highways on routes, including Sangareddy – Nanded -Akola, Jagtial -Karimnagar -Warangal, Kodad -Khammam, Suryapet -Khammam, Jadcherla -Kalwakurthy -Mallepalli, Nizamabad -Jagdalpur and Mancherial -Chandrapur.

Forest clearance for four-laning of Yadagirigutta -Warangal national highway would be given soon. Mr. Sharma asked the power officials to complete shifting of their facilities on the route immediately. The Engineer-in-Chief of Roads and Buildings, I. Ganapathi Reddy, and Chairman and Managing Director of Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company G. Raghuma Reddy were present.
