Taking over from Tigerair, Scoot, another low-cost carrier from Singapore Airlines, has been launched in Chennai, offering a promotional fare of Rs. 5,300 from the city to Singapore.
The airline also offers a promotional fare of Rs. 13,500 for travel from Chennai to Sydney.
Speaking at the launch, Leslie Thng, chief commercial officer of Scoot, said the fares were inclusive of taxes and they would operate daily services from Chennai to Singapore from Tuesday.
“All aircraft are Boeing 787 and we have 11 of them in our fleet for now. We also offer an array of in-flight amenities that includes wifi on board for passengers,” he added.
He noted that their capacity had also increased to 330, an increase from the 180 that Tigerair had offered.
“India is one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world and South India especially is one of the important markets for us,” he added.
Bharat Mahadevan, country head of Scoot, said they planned to expand to other cities in the near future.
“Apart from the three cities — Chennai, Coimbatore and Tiruchirapalli — we are also contemplating about including Madurai in the list. There is a good population and a different mix of passengers travelling from these three south Indian cities to countries in South East Asia. For instance, there are a lot of corporate travellers to Australia and Korea,” he added.
The promotional fare from Tuesday is on for a week for travel up to August.
“Soon after the promotional fares, we will also come up with similar offers every Tuesday which may be on for a few hours,” he added.
A leading travel agent said this trend might greatly benefit people as other competing airlines might also come up with such fares.
