10,000 free spectacles to be distributed to BMC garbage collectors, auto rickshaw drivers, taxi drivers, BEST bus drivers, Mumbai Police among others.

Mumbai June 2018: Google org grantee, Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust, a disability and education-centric not for profit organisation based out of Mumbai in association with Essilor Vision Foundation and Titan Eye Plus is continuing its charitable work to distribute 10000 free premium quality spectacles to Mumbaikars.

600 Mumbai Police personnel will be screened for eye measurements at S.R.P.F. Ground, Goregaon East, in Mumbai on 27th and 28th June 2018, between 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Rajiv Mehta, Trustee of Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust explains, “A Collaborative approach to social impact is the way forward. Ratna Nidhi is proud to be partnering with Essilor Vision Foundation & Titan Eye Plus to make vision10000 a reality.”

A part of its Vision 10,000 initiative, this is the 2nd in a series of screening camps, that will evaluate prospective donees, for eye number measurements. The first camp was at Ratna Nidhi’s Mahalaxmi Medical centre on 22nd May 2018. “Beneficiaries of this first camp will receive ready spectacles with fine quality lenses in July this year at Ratna Nidhi and Rotary Worli Medical Center in Mahalaxmi,” added Mr Mehta.

Sandeep Karnik DIG, SRPF says “ Ratna Nidhi is providing an end-to-end solution; not just screening but also the spectacles. This is very valuable to our police staff, and we are hoping to take this to other centres across Maharashtra as well.”

As a further service, under its Vision10000 initiative, Ratna Nidhi in association with Vision Foundation of India, Babulnath, will also organise free cataract surgeries for those who need it. ​

Ratna Nidhi has come a long way since its inception in 1990.  A few of its initiatives are as follows;

  1. Ratna Nidhi runs the world’s largest book donation drive called #MissionMillionBooks in Collaboration With e-commerce giant Alibaba.
  2. Eminent personalities like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Anna Hazare, Kiran Bedi, Udit Raj, Ramdas Athawale and Shri Ratan Tata have supported their work.
  3. Ratna Nidhi is one of the largest donors of orthotics and prosthetics in the world. In India alone, they have distributed over 2.48 lac mobility aids, like Jaipur foot, polio callipers, wheelchairs and crutches.
  4. They have distributed 23 million free meals as part of their mid-day meals in Mumbai every morning- over the last 15 years.
  5. They have distributed over 1.10 million garments to the poor and needy as of March 2018.
  6. In March 2016, Ratna Nidhi Trust was selected by Google for its Impact Challenge for Disabilities Award to further technology in helping limb amputees.
