Popular photo sharing platform Instagram has added another 100 million users since April 2017, taking its total active user base to 800 million. This was announced by Carolyn Everson, vice president, global marketing solutions, Facebook at an Advertising Week event in US early this week. Its popularity can be attributed to the flurry of new features it adds to regularly to make the app more user-friendly and safe.
Here are some of the new features in Instagram aimed at making the platform safer and more welcoming to its users.
More control over comments
Social media is replete with cases of hostility, bullying and threats. To counter these, social media platforms have started giving users more control over comments. Instagram provides the option to block offensive comments automatically.
Now Instagram is offering users the option to decide who can comment on their posts and who cannot. Users can now restrict the right to comment only to their followers or people they follow. Also, users will be able to block other accounts from commenting on their posts even if their account is public.
One can access these tools in app Profile->Options->Comments->Comment controls.
In addition to this, Instagram can now identify and block comments in Arabic, French, German and Portuguese languages as well. Earlier this feature worked only with English language.
Lending a hand to the depressed
People undergoing depression often turn to social media to express their angst. Several studies have blamed the social media itself for causing depression among youngsters. There have been numerous instances of people leaving a suicide post on their social media profile. Instagram will now allow users to anonymously report a person who has been showing signs of mental stress or depressions during a live broadcast.
Instagram team will reach out to the person in need of help immediately offering options to talk to a helpline volunteer, talk to a friend or get other tips and support. Instagram claims they have got a full time team active 24×7 to handle such cases.
Making Instagram more friendly
Instagram has come with a bunch of unique heart-shaped stickers, called Kindness stickers. They have been created by artists from their global community and are available with other stickers in the app. Users can apply these on their videos and photos to spread a message of kindness to others.
