Govt to acquire 50,000 electric three-wheelers in Nov, up to 1 m over 18 months

In a major push for electric vehicles, the government has announced mega electric vehicle tender, reports CNBC-TV18. It had reported exclusively on this news last week, and the current development is a confirmation of the same.

Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, spearheading the government’s electric mobility mission, announced the government’s decision to put out a tender to acquire 50,000 electric three-wheelers in November.

The plans don’t stop there as the government has higher ambitions of acquiring up to 1 million electric three-wheelers over the next 18 months.

The move clearly shows the government’s priorities to incentivise electric vehicles.

Interestingly, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is all set to launch their first set of three-wheelers today. Companies such as Bajaj Auto, TVS Motor are also vying for a share of this 50,000-electric three-wheelers pie and has their prototypes ready.

According to sources, the government is also planning to come out with a 10,000 electric bus tender in January 2018.
