4G promotion will boost advertising sector 15% in 2016

Higher spending by telecom companies to promote their 4G services is expected to boost the advertising industry by 10-15 percent in 2016, according to Deloitte India.
“The ongoing launch of high-speed 4G data services is set to become the next battleground for telecom firms. The industry is expecting operators like Airtel , Vodafone and the soon-to-be-launched Reliance Jio to spend millions of dollars on advertising over the next few months to grab market share,” Deloitte India’s Ashesh Jani told PTI.

He said the 4G services will also help in pushing the ad spends on mobile.

“Advertisers will be spending more money on video ads on hand-held devices in 2016. Advertisers will think mobile-first when making their digital advertising strategy. With more telecom operators ready to launch 4G services, video consumption on mobile will rise even more, thus pushing ad spends on video ads,” he said.

As per an Internet and Mobile Association of India study, as much as 60 percent of subscribers in the country access the net through mobile phones. It is expected to reach 315 million by 2017.

A recent report from Internet traffic tracking firm ComScore revealed that online video consumption here grew 100 percent in the past two years alone.

“Digital media continued to show the maximum year-on-year growth, above 30 percent in 2015. Video, mobile and social media are biggest growth drivers for it,” Jani said.

The ICC T20 World Cup, which will be held in the country from March, is also expected to be a trigger in 2016, he said.

In 2015, he observed that e-commerce players had increased their spending by 70 percent and now accounted for 6 percent of total TV advertising.

Online retailers have used radio extensively in their ad campaigns and have aggressively advertised on the medium to gain market, Jani notes.

The Cricket World Cup, IPL, and Bihar and Delhi assembly polls also contributed to overall growth in 2015 and this year too with four large states — West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Assam — going to polls, this will give a big leg-up to the advertising industry.

“Government ad spends rose drastically in 2015 with campaigns like the Make in India, Swachh Bharat and Digital India,” Jani said, adding last year ad industry maintained its annual growth similar to that of 2014.

According to the Pitch-Madison Media Advertising Outlook 2015, the advertising industry grew by 16.4 percent in 2014.

It revised its forecast for 2015 to 13.8 percent from 9.6 percent.

Google’s DeepMind finds way to overcome AI’s forgetfulness problem

London: DeepMind, the London-based artificial intelligence (AI) company owned by Alphabet Inc., claims it overcame a key limitation affecting one of the most promising machine learning technologies: the software’s inability to remember.

The breakthrough, described in a paper published Tuesday in the academic journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, may open the way for artificial intelligence systems to be more easily applied to multiple tasks, instead of being narrowly trained for one purpose. It should also improve the ability of AI systems to transfer knowledge between tasks and to master a sequence of linked steps.

Neural networks, software which is loosely based on the structure of synapses in the human brain, are considered the best machine learning technique for language translation, image classification and image generation. But these networks suffer from a major flaw scientists call “catastrophic forgetting.” They exist in a kind of perpetual present: every time the network is given new data, it overwrites what it has previously learned.

In human brains, neuroscientists believe that one way in which memory works is that connections between neurons that seem important for a particular skill become less likely to be rewired. The DeepMind researchers drew on this theory, known as synaptic consolidation, to create a way to allow neural networks to remember. They worked with Claudia Clopath, a neuroscientist at London’s Imperial College, who is a co-author on the paper.

“We have shown it is possible to train a neural network sequentially, which was previously thought to be a fundamental limitation,” James Kirkpatrick, a DeepMind researcher who was the lead author on the paper, said in an interview.

The researchers created an algorithm—called Elastic Weight Consolidation or EWC—that computes how important each connection in a neural network is to the task it has just learned and then assigns this connection a mathematical weight proportional to its importance. The weight slows down the rate at which the value of that particular node in the neural network can be altered. In this way, the network is able to retain knowledge while learning a new task.

The researchers tested the algorithm on ten classic Atari games, which the neural network had to learn to play from scratch. DeepMind had previously created an AI agent able to play these games as well or better than any human player. But that earlier AI could only learn one game at a time. If it was later shown one of the first games it learned, it had to start all over again.

The new EWC-enabled software was able to learn all ten games and, on average, come close to human-level performance on all of them. It did not, however, perform as well as a neural network trained specifically for just one game, the researchers wrote.

Peter Dayan, a professor of neuroscience at University College London, said DeepMind’s paper might benefit neuroscientists in thinking about how synaptic consolidation works. He said studies by psychologist John Pearce, at Cardiff University, seemed to indicate a very similar mechanism determined which synapses were available or unavailable for new learning.

DeepMind, which Alphabet purchased for £400 million ($486.4 million) in 2014, is best known for having created AI software able to beat the world’s best players at the ancient Asian strategy game Go. That achievement was considered a major milestone in computer science because Go has so many possible moves that a computer cannot simply figure out the best move in every situation and instead must rely on something more akin to intuition—making educated guesses based on its own experience.

Oppo F1 selfie-focused phone now available for pre-order

Chinese company Oppo’s selfie-focused phone, aka F1 is expected to make its way to India on January 28. The phone in question has however landed first in Vietnam where it is now available for pre-order. The Oppo F1 has been priced at roughly around $290 which roughly translates to Rs 19,377. The phone will start shipping from January 21.

The Oppo F1 which was first announced during the recently concluded CES 2016 trade show focuses a great deal on premium design and top-notch camera capabilities. The F1 comes with a 13-megapixel camera on the rear with f/2.2 lens and LED flash. There’s also an 8-megapixel camera on the front with f/2.0 lens (1/4″ sensor). The phone uses the screen (that lights up) as a flash in low-light environments.

The phone comes with full metal unibody and packs in a 5-inch HD IPS display protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4 (2.5D). It is powered by a 1.7GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 processor coupled with Adreno 405 GPU and 3GB of RAM. It come with 16GB of internal memory which is expandable by up to 128GB via microSD card. The dualSIM phone runs Android 5.1 Lollipop-based ColorOS 2.1 which is Oppo’s custom skin. The phone is backed by a 2,500mAh battery.

Oppo will celebrate its second anniversary in India this year. Only recently it announced a new after sales-service policy under which “all handsets purchased starting from December 15, 2015 will have a two years’ service warranty applicable across all Oppo service centres in India.” The company also plans to open 200 new service centres across India.

IndiaHacks 2016, one of the world’s largest developer confluence hosted by HackerEarth in association with Altimetrik, has attracted over fifty thousand developers till date.
