A Small Town Startup is Creating India’s Own Largest Social Network

Developed in non-descript town, some 200 km north of Delhi, “WhatDaFun” (WDF) is one of India’s fastest growing app challenging some of the established names in terms of reach to Indian masses. It is already downloaded on 3,00,000 mobile-phones across the country and is spreading fast. WDF was presented as one of India’s leading innovation at Tomorrow’s India conclave held in Singapore 24-27 January to promote small and medium enterprises, startups, innovations, and creative ventures.

As a true garage startup, WDF started as a hobby to serve society’s need for Indian fun messages. It caught up quick among masses & with strong word of mouth, it is now among the top charted apps in both iOS & Android platforms. WDF offers a massive categorised collection of jokes, statuses, quotes & images for sharing on WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, etc. The categories range from Husband-wife jokes to puzzles to wisdom to shayari. People are even sharing their jokes on happening news events whether it is cricket performance or political goof ups! WDF also have a large database on yearly hot occasions be it Diwali or Valentine’s Day!

“All the messages that are being circulated by Indians on their famous social platforms, are either picked up from our app or eventually land up in the app,” says Rajat Bansal, founder of WDF app. “Users are themselves creating, uploading, moderating, liking, sharing, and commenting on the content. There are multiple levels of duplication & content filtering to ensure high quality of content. Our key to success is strong user feedback oriented approach towards app development. We maintain a strong connect with users & value every feedback. We continuously strive to keep our users excited by meeting their demands and adding innovative new features” he adds.

“People come here looking for fun content on their favourite topic, but they also find a whole fun community interacting on these topics.” says Singapore-based Dr. Rohit Bansal, who is looking after the business side of the venture. “It’s not only the content that is driving the people crazy, it is a Fun community where people are everyday making new friends with like-minded interests, and even dating as well. With such a loyal & addictive fan following, some users have reviewed that they are spending more time on WDF than on WhatsApp or Facebook.”

For Bansal brothers, it’s a “Make in India” moment for them. They say we want to make India’s very own social platform by Indians, for Indians.”

Dr. Rohit is involved in transforming this homegrown startup to a global venture. Dr. Bansal believes “the sky’s the limit” for WDF which will generate more than enough revenue to support its growth into the global market in the coming year. “We already have several offers for angel & VC funding,” he adds” but since our product is already generating more than enough continue to meet its expenses, we are not in a hurry. We want to mature the product further & wait for WDF downloads in India to cross the first million, which we expect to happen this year.”
